The Mental Health & Wellbeing of Parents

As I write this on the morning of my oldest son’s first day of school, my emotions are a mix of anxiety and validation. The day has come with its own set of adjustments—waking up earlier, keeping a sharp eye on the clock, and making sure all the essentials are ready. Amidst these physical changes, there have also been moments of navigating my son’s sadness and anxiety. This morning and this article is a reminder of how deeply parenting can impact our mental health.

Recently, the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory highlighting a pressing public health issue: the mental health and wellbeing of parents. The advisory highlights how parents are experiencing higher levels of stress compared to other adults.

33% of parents reported high levels of stress in the past month, compared to just 20% of other adults.

This statistic underscores a growing concern that resonates deeply with those of us in the field of mental health. As a Milwaukee therapist specializing in anxiety and stress, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges parents face. Whether you’re seeking counseling in Milwaukee or virtual psychotherapy in Denver, Colorado, understanding and addressing these stressors is crucial.

The Unique Stressors Parents Face

Parenting isn’t just about keeping your child fed and clothed; it’s an all-encompassing role that brings its own set of unique stressors. From financial strain to balancing time for oneself, parents are juggling a lot!

Financial Strain:

With the rising costs of living—be it groceries, childcare, or after-school programs—many parents find themselves stretched thin. This financial pressure can add an extra layer of stress.

Time Demands:

Parents often struggle with the feeling that taking time for themselves is selfish. The demands of raising children can make it challenging to carve out moments for self-care.

Health and Safety Concerns:

Worrying about your children’s health and safety can be a constant source of anxiety.

Isolation and Loneliness:

The demands of parenting often leave little time for social connections, leading to feelings of isolation.

Technology and Social Media:

Navigating your child’s use of technology and understanding its impacts can be overwhelming.

Cultural Pressures:

Societal expectations about parenting can add another layer of stress.

Mental Health:

Parents dealing with their own mental health, particularly in the context of family violence, poverty, or discrimination, face additional challenges.

The Impact of Prolonged Stress

When stress becomes severe or prolonged, it doesn’t just affect parents—it also impacts their children. Prolonged stress can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression in parents, which in turn can affect their children’s mental health. Children of stressed parents are at higher risk for developing their own mental health issues, which can start earlier and be more severe.

How Anxiety Therapy Can Help Parents

Understanding and managing anxiety is essential for maintaining mental health. Here’s my tips as a Milwaukee Therapist.

Recognize Anxiety:

Anxiety Therapy helps you understand that anxiety is an emotion, not a defining trait. The mantra “I am not my anxiety” can be powerful in separating yourself from the emotion.

Awareness:

By learning about what happens in your body and mind during anxiety, you can gain better control over it.

Mindset Shift:

Therapy can help you develop a mindset that allows you to notice and manage anxiety in the moment, using practical tools to bring relief.

Practice:

With the right techniques, you can practice stopping worry and anxiety when they arise, leading to increased feelings of relief and control.

Confidence:

Building trust in your ability to handle anxiety effectively can make a significant difference in how you manage stress. This in turn allows you to be the parent you want to be for your children.

The Role of Policy & Community Support: It Take a Village

Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, emphasizes the need for a fundamental shift in how we value and prioritize parents’ mental health. He advocates for policy changes and expanded community programs to better support parents. (how wonderful with these be!) These changes could include:

Paid Time Off: Allowing parents to take time off to care for a sick child without added stress.

Affordable Childcare: Ensuring that quality childcare is accessible and affordable.

Reliable Mental Health Care: Providing access to mental health resources that are both effective and affordable. (Please reach out I’m here to support you.)

Community Support: Creating spaces and programs that foster social connections and support for parents.
